Terrace Projection: James Henry with Henry Harmony Nelson's Descendants – the Saunders family from Mooroopna

18 Families recognises the 18 ancestors whose descendants make up the thriving Jaara community who live in, around and beyond Castlemaine on Dja Dja Wurrung Country today.

We are grateful to the community for their participation and shared desire to create a contemporary representation of the Jaara community in all their humanity and diversity.

This Terrace Projection series of photographs follows Henry's previous exhibition and interviews with the Jaara community of four families on Country, commissioned by Castlemaine Art Museum in 2021.

James Henry
Born 1979, Sydney, Australia. Lives and works in Melbourne, Australia. James Henry has been working as a photographer since the start of 2010. Starting out by working alongside his job as an event’s organiser and as a musician himself, he made the transition across to shooting events quite easily and had a lot of clients keen to work with him in his new field.

James Henry has since broadened his practice to include travel landscapes, cityscapes through to fashion. Portrait photography is a key aspect of his art practice for which he has been in demand across the state and across the country. In 2021, Castlemaine Art Museum commissioned the series 18 Families. In 2022, James Henry was commissioned by PHOTO Australia and exhibited Kulin Generations as part of PHOTO 2022, Melbourne.

Being a part of the Aboriginal community in Melbourne, he has been widely used with regular high profile clients and small businesses. James Henry works with great cultural sensitivity and engagement with First Nations communities. Having worked across the country in Aboriginal urban, rural and remote communities, this understanding and respect for culture extends far beyond his home of Melbourne.

Terrace Projections
Through the Australian Government's RISE Fund, Castlemaine Art Museum will host Terrace Nights and Terrace Projections, a program of exhibitions, installations and events for the community. Using the medium of light, CAM is bringing contemporary images and ideas to the streets of Castlemaine in a new series of commissions with local and national artists. Screening every evening from sunset (currently 7:30pm).
